What We Do

Cities lie at the heart of everyday life. Like organisms, they are constantly changing, adapting, and evolving to reflect dynamics of wealth, power, community, and livelihoods.

Our Mission

The mission of Pulse: The McGill Urban Studies Journal is to share our passion for cities with readers and demonstrate the importance of an urban lens in every conversation. By showcasing the outstanding work that McGill students are producing in the field, our aim is to support this mission by providing an opportunity for a productive exchange of knowledge and creative ideas.

In response to the combined increase in relevance of urban studies across sectors with students’ peaking interests, Pulse’s scope extends to numerous fields. These disciplines include, but are not limited to, geography, sociology, history, and political science, among others that value urban spaces in their work. We also value the strength of our community’s creative talents and hope to open up a forum for sharing those with the public. Be it through academic research, photography, poetry or other mediums, you have a place in Pulse’s library. Help us become your go-to spot for all things urban!

Pulse acknowledges this integral role that the built environment plays yet understands that it is the individuals living in cities that provide them with life–we make these hearts beat; we give them a pulse.
